What is a HoneyBell?
Actually HoneyBells are not oranges at all. They’re a unique natural hybrid of Dancy Tangerine and Duncan Grapefruit, which are both seeded fruit. But…HoneyBells usually have no seeds. HoneyBells are perfect eating once each year in January. They will not be hurried to maturity and we will not ship HoneyBells to anyone unless the fruit is perfect.

Drug Interactions
We receive many inquiries regarding HoneyBells and possible drug interactions. While we are not medical professionals and cannot make recommendations with regard to various medications and our HoneyBells, we can provide some limited information which will assist you and your doctor decide if HoneyBells will be a problem with medications you may be taking.

After reading the many articles on line regarding drug interactions and grapefruit, we learned that it is the furanocoumarins in grapefruit which cause the problems with medications. Since the HoneyBell or Mineola Tangelo is a hybrid of a Dancy Tangerine and a Duncan Grapefruit there were fears that the furanocoumarins would be present in the Tangelo hybrids as well. A study published in The Journal of Food Science, 70(4):C307-C313 authored by Wilbur Widmer states that “ These citrus relatives of the grapefruit were tested and found not to contain drug-interactive compounds.”

Technical Abstract: Tangelos are citrus hybrids with grapefruit and tangerine parentage and are a significant crop in Florida, marketed as specialty fruit. Because tangelos contain genetic material from grapefruit, there is the question of whether they contain furanocoumarins and exhibit an interaction with the same drugs associated with the grapefruit/drug interaction. Authentic samples of 12 commercially grown tangelos and 2 nonhybrid tangerine varieties grown in Florida were obtained and screened for furanocoumarin monomer and dimer content. None of the tangelos or tangerines tested were found to contain any furanocoumarins. This presents evidence the commercial tangerine and tangelo varieties grown in Florida are unlikely to cause any interaction with the drugs affected by grapefruit.
